I had the privilege of working with Amazing Minds and Carers First on a powerful project to raise awareness of the challenges faced by young carers in Kent.
I had the privilege of working with Amazing Minds, a specialist organisation supporting the emotional wellbeing and growth mindset of children and young people, and Carers First, a charity dedicated to supporting young carers across Kent, on a powerful project to raise awareness of the challenges young carers face.
The project began with creative workshops for children aged 7–12 who are young carers. Through drawing, discussion, and collaborative activities, they shared their experiences, from the pressures and responsibilities they manage daily, to the pride and love they feel in supporting their families. Their voices and ideas formed the heart of the project.
Using these insights, I designed and produced a short animated film featuring a toy-like robot with a visible battery icon, a simple, relatable metaphor for how caring responsibilities can drain energy faster than for other children. This charity animation highlights the struggles young carers face, while also showing the hope, support, and resources that Carers First provides.
To extend the impact, I also developed a full suite of supporting materials, including posters, leaflets and social media graphics. These help schools, families and community centres share the message, encourage more young carers to come forward.
The project is now in the process of being rolled out to schools across Kent, where it will be used with the aim of attracting young carers who aren’t currently known. With the hope that they can access the support they need. It has already caught the interest of the local council, reflecting the importance of raising awareness of support networks for young carers.
This collaboration combines creative strategy and empathy to give young carers a voice and reduce stigma in a way that is engaging and meaningful for children. Demonstrating the power of charity animation to communicate complex issues in a way young people can connect with. I’m incredibly proud of this project and hope it makes all the difference it can for young carers across Medway.
